In 1918, 16-year-old Hattie Brooks suddenly finds herself in the possession of her late uncle's homestead in Montana. After being shuttled from one relative to another all of her life, the claim seems like a dream come true. But homesteading is harder than she expected, and Hattie begins to wonder just how long she can stand her ground, with cantankerous farm animals, a neighbor trying to run her off her claim, and anti-German sentiment rising against her closest friend's German husband.
